Gen Z young adults (18-28 years old) are breaking the mold. Raised amid hookup culture, digital noise, and gender confusion, they’re turning back to traditional values. Not out of nostalgia — but necessity.
Recent studies show big shifts. Far fewer young adults see marriage as irrelevant compared to millennials two decades ago. In fact, almost all Gen Z still want to get married someday.
The change is even clearer when it comes to dating and sex. Back in the early 2000s, casual hookups were pushed as the norm for most young people. Today, only a small portion of young adults say that’s true. More young people are choosing to wait longer and hold more conservative views on casual sex and pornography — even though society pushes a different message.
At first glance, these statistics may seem contradictory. Gen Z is the generation of TikTok, “situationships,” and redefined identities. But beneath the surface, they’ve watched broken homes, divorce, and the emotional fallout from uncommitted sexual relationships.
Many are quietly realizing the world’s way doesn’t work.
Generational expert Bryan Driscoll told Newsweek: “Gen Z’s shift isn’t about fairy-tale romance. It’s survival. They’ve seen millennials crushed by student debt, housing woes, and burnout. For Gen Z, marriage is a strategy for stability.
"In a country where your access to healthcare, housing, and even basic financial security is tied to your relationship status," Driscoll said, "marriage becomes a necessary strategy."
That may sound unromantic — but for the church, it’s a hopeful sign. This longing for structure aligns with God’s design. And that opens a door for the gospel.
Gen Z’s shift points to growing openness to God’s design: lifelong, covenantal love. Marriage is far more than a social or legal contract. It’s a mirror of Christ’s love for the Church. It’s a living gospel picture sealed by sacrifice and promise.
Gen Z is hungry for lasting love and meaningful commitment. They may not know it, but they’re really hungry for a relationship with God.
This is where we can step in and offer the greatest story ever told. The story of a Saviour who loved us so much He gave everything to prove it. The story of a love that sacrifices, sanctifies, and endures.
That’s the kind of love Gen Z seeks. Only Christ can truly satisfy it.
The Church’s mission is timeless: to teach all nations (Matthew 28:19). But each generation offers new open doors. For Gen Z, that door is their hunger for stable relationships and covenant love.
Christian families modeling joyful, Christ-centered marriages preach loudly with their lives. Churches teaching biblical love and marriage offer clarity amid confusion. Young believers pursuing purity and faithfulness stand out as radical witnesses.
Many Gen Zers are growing up without stable families or strong relationships. They need the Church to walk with them. Share the gospel. Provide discipleship. Offer patience and love. Because in the end, we’re not just offering advice. We’re offering the love of Christ — a love that never fails.
Young adults know they don’t have the answers. But they’re asking the right questions: What is real love? Can commitment work? Is marriage worth it?
The Bible has the answer. Not a quick fix, but the enduring gospel of Jesus Christ. Whether in conversation or by handing them a tract —let's give it to them.
