The Collapse of a Disastrous Trend

Recent studies reveal a striking reversal in a trend that once seemed unstoppable: the surge of transgender and “queer” identification among young Americans. After peaking in 2023, the number of college students identifying as trans has nearly halved, dropping from 7 percent to less than 4 percent. Even students identifying as gender fluid have seen declines of roughly ten points over the same period.

Eric Kaufmann, the social scientist behind the research, summarized the shift bluntly on X: “Trans identification is in free fall among the young.” The Centre for Heterodox Social Science report described this change as “the fading of a trend,” noting that improved mental health among youth appears to be a factor in the decline.

Youth Take a Stand

Young Americans were once highly susceptible to gender ideology, particularly in schools and on social media. Yet in recent years, a growing number of youth have begun rejecting the narrative and speaking out.

Despite intense promotion of gender ideology by elite institutions and political figures, Jarrett Stepman of The Daily Signal observes that “enough people had the courage to plant their flag in the truth.” That courage, he argues, has helped shift the cultural tide. High-profile detransitioner Chloe Cole agrees: “[The] entire culture is shifting and waking up to the horrors of gender ideology.”

Perhaps the clearest pushback comes directly from students. In Loudoun County, Virginia, teens are demanding female-only spaces in schools, including locker rooms and bathrooms. They confront policies that allow males to access these spaces, advocating for protections rooted in biology and fairness. Their activism echoes earlier parental protests and shows that awareness and action can go hand in hand.

Families Pay the Price

While the statistics are encouraging, the human toll of this movement is undeniable. Families have been deeply affected, illustrated by the stories of “trans widows”—spouses left to navigate the aftermath of a partner’s transition. Shannon, a mother and former wife, recounts how her husband’s transition devastated their family, leaving emotional scars that linger in her children.

“It broke my heart that he could walk away from our beautiful children. The impact this would have on the kids affected me the most… They were extremely embarrassed by their father. They were taken to counseling and told not to call their father ‘Dad’ anymore. They were heartbroken.”

Her story underscores the emotional and psychological strain gender ideology imposes on children and families. Shannon emphasizes societal pressure to celebrate a parent’s transition: “The trans movement is so corrosive to the family and to natural rights… It’s so hard to watch the world collectively celebrating the demise of family, free speech, women’s protections, truth, religious liberty, and freedom of association.” Even with the trend in decline, the full impact of these experiences will only become clear over time.

Sen. Tom Cotton is one of several voices calling for accountability: “The doctors, Democratic politicians, and public health professionals who pushed these lies… did permanent, irreversible damage. They should be held accountable.”

The Fight for Truth

The drop in transgender and nonbinary identification among young Americans signals a cultural correction, but the battle is far from over. Gender ideology remains entrenched in some institutions, and families continue to face pressures and distortions of truth.

Churches and communities have a role to play, equipping young people to discern right from wrong and actively engaging in outreach. Whether through conversation, mentoring, or sharing gospel-centered resources, believers can help guide the next generation toward both spiritual and cultural clarity.
