In early October, Pope Francis released a new document “Laudate Deum,” specifically targeting the subject of climate change. The Pope began this campaign in 2015 with the encyclical “Laudato Si” (Praise Be to you).

In it he stressed the interconnectedness of humanity and the world and admonished the nations to pay attention to the growing threat of global warming and environmental degradation.

Apparently, they did not heed his warning to his satisfaction, so now he is coming down heavy.

He claims that we have reached the point where we are “unable to halt the enormous damage we have caused,” and that the planet is “fast reaching a point of no return.” Corrective action must be “drastic, intense and count on the commitment of all.”

Culprits are the wealthy elites indicted for their selfishness and greed, evidenced by their “conspicuous consumption” producing the bulk of the environmental pollution. Victims are the little people in the poorer nations who do not have the industrial advances that produce the pollutants.

Evidence for the urgency, he claims, is “extreme weather phenomenon, frequent periods of unusual heat, drought, and other cries of protest from the earth.” These he connects directly to human activity and pollution.

The pope’s earlier document carried considerable weight at the Paris Climate Agreement eight years ago. Now he has specifically directed his latest encyclical to the UN delegates who will be attending the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) this November. In his encyclical he castigates these world leaders for their low implementation of his previous directive.

Francis writes:

“With the passage of time, I have realized our responses have not been adequate, while the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point.”

So how should we as believers think about this picture?

First of all, the climate is always changing. Our thin slice of weather history in the last few hundred years does not include many other drastic gyrations that geologic history only hints at.

Credible scientists point out that there are several other known factors involved in the changing climate. The sun itself has certain cycles that directly affect our weather. Volcanic activity and cloud patterns have also been mentioned. Most admit that it is so complex that little is actually known about the process.

From a biblical point of view, there is strong evidence from the stories in the Old Testament that weather patterns can be directly affected by the obedience of the people who are benefiting from that weather. Jesus said that God sends the rain on the just and the unjust but in God’s dealing with Israel there seemed to be a limit to His patience. (See Lev. 26 and Deut. 11).

We are also watching the rising fear and chaos that the Bible predicted. The globalists plan to use that to make the people accept the authoritarian Antichrist. They have been highly successful in spreading Marxist socialism by stirring up racism or by pitting the “privileged” against the “discriminated against.”

Satan’s overall goal behind all of this is to destroy the prosperity that has enabled the spread of the gospel to the far reaches of the planet.

These events graphically illustrate that the “great whore” of Revelation 17 and 18 that sits on the seven hills of Rome, is continuing to plot according to biblical prophecy. We are watching the development of the political beast that the whore rides upon and that the entire world is going to “wonder” after.
