America Must Become “Good” Again

"It's the absolute secularization of the nation, the purge of the Almighty from our public life, the crowning politicians king of the universe, that is destroying us." This refreshing bit of clarity comes from commentator Star Parker writing in the dailysignal.com.

She goes on to reference the quote attributed to French historian Alexis de Tocqueville: “America is great because she is good.” For those who don’t know the story, de Tocqueville supposedly came over from France in the early 19th century, to find out for himself why America was doing so well in the world. He searched through the economy, politics, and general society but only after visiting the churches did he reach that conclusion.

Then he supposedly stated that, “If America ever stops being good, she will stop being great.” Historians claim that there is no direct evidence that de Tocqueville said this, nevertheless, the concept is valid. Although Jesus said that there is none good but God, He is speaking of men, not the relative flavor of a society.

Godless people today are canceling as much as they can of America’s history, painting it with a broad brush of evil treatment of slaves and Native Americans. But America was made prosperous and a model of self-government to the world because of the basic decency of its common people. They honored Biblical principles, raised good citizen children, helped their neighbors, and built dozens of churches in each of our small cities. That basic goodness was, and is, the foundation of America’s greatness.

Another wise man put it this way: “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34.

Of course, there is no end to doleful diagnoses. But Parker headlined her article with the proper solution: “America cannot be great until we make America good again.”

However, that cannot be done by legislation or wishful thinking. In chapter 17:9, the prophet Jeremiah told Israel in his day that the heart of the problem was a heart problem: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” And that is still true today.

So what is the answer?

That came from the One who knows us best —our Creator: ”Ye must be born again.” John 3:7.

Only the Spirit of God can change the human heart.

But that good news must be gotten out, if it is going to do us any good. The Apostle Paul asks in Romans 10:14: “…And how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Many Chick tract users testify to the power of God’s Word printed in a faithful little paper preacher. Today, we are finding that more people have a rising interest in the Chick tract, A Love Story.

This gentle listing of so many of the ways that our Creator cares for us, apparently has a special appeal today.

There is no doubt that this hurting world desperately needs to be assured that God cares for them. But is it fair not to tell them about it?

By high-volume printing we are able to get the price down to less than $0.11 apiece in case lots of 1000 tracts of the same title. Everyone today needs a Love Story, the message that “God so loved the world” in every Chick gospel tract.
